Job overview

In partnership with the National Breast Imaging Academy we are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Research Fellow. Highly skilled in breast imaging, the successful candidate will work within a cohesive and supportive multi-disciplinary team to provide a quality service in our breast symptomatic and screening services.

This particular post requires a highly skilled doctor who has experience in breast imaging and examination. The post holder will work to complete an MD and would be expected to work fixed clinical sessions under the appropriate supervision of a Consultant Radiologist. Flexible sessions or supporting clinical activity sessions would cover additional tasks, mainly research for which  there is an expectation to participate in departmental audit and research projects.

The service has encompassed the full 4 tier skill mix thus supporting learning and development opportunities at all levels. The imaging team includes Consultant Radiologists, Consultant and Reporting Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners.

The Breast Surgical team includes Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, a Consultant Breast Care Nurse and Breast Care Nurses.

The multidisciplinary teams are innovative, cohesive and forward thinking, participating in multiple  research and audit trials. The department receives excellent feedback from patients, registrars and students.

Main duties of the job

The appointment is for a fixed term of 24 months and the post will be split between duties at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead Breast Imaging Department,  at our satellite facility at Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre and with the option for remote working where appropriate and agreed. The postholder would be expected to undertake the following (which is not an exhaustive list):

1. Contribute to the team of breast radiologists in screen reading, assessment, symptomatic work and localisations.

2. Actively contribute to the multi professional team working in the department demonstrating a firm commitment to respect and include all disciplines and roles within the service.

3. Participate in and contribute to the appropriate clinical and educational activities of the Breast Unit.

4. Participate in the managerial, teaching and regular audit activities of the Breast Unit.

5. Contribute to the MDT work of the breast unit.

6. Seven day working has not yet been implemented within Breast Imaging although there are some weekend screening clinics.

7. There is no on-call commitment associated with this post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will:

  • Be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and activity may include clinics offsite e.g. at Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre and the ability to work remotely where appropriate.
  • Become part of a team currently comprised of eight consultant breast radiologists, one specialist breast clinician and one consultant breast radiographer based at QEH, with prospects in the future to become part of a wider network with neighbouring trusts.
  • Complete an MD as part of the fixed term post.
  • Contribute to research work with guidance from colleagues and support from the NBIA.
  • Assist in the provision of breast radiological services at QEH and for the NHS Breast Screening Programme.

Two current radiology staff have allocated sessions in main x ray departments at QEH and South Tyneside Hospital.
  • Assist in multidisciplinary team work.
