Job overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is looking for a fixed term (12 months) GiRFT Fellow in General Surgery who will be predominantly based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH), with responsibilities across both hospitals’ sites to start in October 2026.

Getting it Right First Time (GiRFT)  is a National Programme hosted by NHS England which focusses on improving the quality of care of patients in England by using data to reduce unwarranted variation and helping providers restore clinical services after the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is an exciting opportunity for a trainee in general surgery or a SAS doctor with equivalent experience to work on quality improvement and national policy related to general surgery directly supervised by the National Clinical Lead for General Surgery at GiRFT. This role is a hybrid role with 24 hours a week funded by the Getting it Right First Time programme and 24 hours of clinical work funded by Shrewsbury an Telford NHS Hospital Trust.

The post-holder will be linked up with other GiRFT Fellows hosted by other Trusts and will in expected to attend training national days incorporating quality improvement, presentation skills, data analysis and writing papers for publication.

Contribution to an out of hours on call rota is core to this role.

Main duties of the job

The GiRFT Fellow will be expected to manage a portfolio of work including projects such as those listed below:

  • Understanding and reducing unwarranted variation in the care of surgical patients
  • Implementation of surgical pathways for High Volume Low Complexity procedures (HVLC)
  • New pathways for outpatient care including Advice and Guidance, straight to test and PIFU
  • Quantifying and mitigating the risk of harm to patients on elective waiting lists
  • Developing new models of care such as procedure room treatments
  • Improving training opportunities in general surgery
  • Research related to the national delivery of general surgery

Clinical

  • To carry out 24 hours of clinical work a week on average
  • Attend outpatient clinics, operating lists and potentially endoscopy lists under supervision of a consultant surgeon
  • Contribute to the emergency general surgery on-call rota at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford
