Job overview

To participate in the provision of an Estates service primarily undertaking electrical repairs, planned maintenance, small works and minor improvements.

It will be anticipated that some mechanical / building duties will be undertaken as training and experience is gained. Participation in the Trust’s Estates tradesman on-call Rota to cover multiple sites is also required. A valid UK driving license is therefore essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver day-to-day electrical maintenance: planned preventative maintenance (PPM), fault diagnosis and repairs, and installation/testing of new works.
  • Carry out compliance testing and checks: portable appliance testing (PAT) and routine testing of essential systems (e.g., fire alarms, nurse call, generators), including interpreting/resetting BMS alarms.
  • Follow Estates policies and safe systems of work: complete documentation, use PPE, work safely, and keep workshops/plant rooms safe and tidy.
  • Support service delivery: record work on CAFM, liaise with wards/departments, supervise/oversee contractors and support/training of other staff.
  • Provide flexible cover: assist other trades as trained, join emergency response/on-call rota, and undertake other reasonable Estates duties (including out-of-hours emergencies).

  • Carry out electrical planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to Estates schedules and good practice.
  • Diagnose faults and repair fixed electrical installations and portable equipment.
  • Complete electrical portable appliance testing (PAT) in line with Electricity at Work Act 1989 and Estates inspection schedules.
  • Follow Estates procedures and complete all required documentation.
  • Install and test new electrical installations to current regulations and hospital standards when instructed.
  • Advise others on correct operation of equipment you are competent with.
  • Record work information for the CAFM management system.
  • Wear required PPE/uniforms and use safety equipment as specified by the Trust/Estates.
  • Induct and instruct other staff as needed to support your duties.
  • Support other Estates trade disciplines to maintain an efficient service.
  • Become fully conversant with mechanical and electrical systems within Estates remit.
  • Assist mechanical/building trades staff when required.
  • Participate in gritting and snow/ice clearance when required.
  • Read, understand and work from engineering and architectural drawings.
  • Work safely at all times, considering the safety of others.
  • Complete required update and health & safety training.
  • Carry out routine testing of essential systems (e.g., fire alarm, nurse call, boilers, generators), recording results per policy.
  • Understand the Building Management System enough to interpret, action and reset alarms.
  • Participate in emergency response teams (e.g., fire, major incident) requiring Estates input.
  • Drive Trust vehicles when required.
  • Help maintain a small electrical materials store.
  • Maintain a tidy and safe environment in the electrical workshop and plant rooms.
  • Train on and operate Estates computerised systems as required.
  • Liaise with matrons/ward sisters/department heads on electrical maintenance and Estates matters.
  • Oversee electrical contractors on site when needed (including isolations and permits).
  • Help maintain documentation for the hospital’s electrical systems.
  • Undertake other relevant Estates duties allocated by management.
  • Be available (within reason) for short-notice/out-of-hours emergency work.
  • Carry out emergency lift procedures when required.
