An exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife in a senior leadership role has arisen. If you are passionate about patient safety and ensuring women and birthing people receive high quality care and have a positive experience, then you are the right person to consider joining the senior midwifery management team as Maternity Matron for Labour Ward (Delivery Suite and Triage) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich (QEW), which is part of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

We are looking for an experienced midwife who can maximise midwifery’s unique contribution to high quality, compassionate care that embraces the Trusts Values to lead the Consultant Led Labour Ward at QEW. You will be innovative, self motivated, highly visible and accessible to women, birthing people, their families and colleagues with expert midwifery skills and committed to giving high quality midwifery care. You will have excellent leadership qualities, be a good communicator with the capability to challenge to ensure that women/ birthing people receive client centred individualised care and have substantial experience of managing a ward or team (at Band 7 level or above).

Main duties of the job

You will understand the importance of multidisciplinary team working and are able to influence and sustain high care standards, safety and quality within the unit.

In this role, the successful applicant will:

  • Be operationally and professionally accountable for the standard of care delivered within the Labour Ward and Triage, as well as supporting effective patient flow across all maternity areas within the hospital-based services.
  • Work closely, collaboratively and in support of the Matrons for In-patients & DAU and Birth Centre & Community Services
  • Ensure clinical care and effectiveness is maintained to a high standard, in line with local, regional and national policies
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators, demonstrating that the care provided to women / birthing people and families is safe, evidence-based and of a high quality
  • Ensure all midwifery staff practice within the NMC regulatory framework and professional regulations are adhered to in the workplace whilst supporting the different needs of individual staff
  • Ensure that multi-disciplinary and multi-professional working is achieved to its maximum benefit and supports holistic care of women/birthing people and their babies
  • Manage budgets within your areas and identify opportunities for cost savings where appropriate
  • Work collaboratively with the MVP to ensure that women’s/ birthing peoples voices are listened to and their experiences are positive.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder has responsibility for the safe and effective management and development of designated areas which Labour ward and Triage. In conjunction with the senior midwifery management team he/she will ensure the provision of a safe 24 hour midwifery service within the Maternity unit to improve outcomes and experience for women/birthing people.

The post holder, in conjunction with the Midwifery Management team, will ensure the provision of a safe 24 hour midwifery service within the Maternity Unit.

To positively and effectively manage the designated groups of staff to include Ward Managers, Designated Specialist Midwives, Midwifery staff, Maternity Support Workers and Maternity care Assistants.

The post holder will be allocated specific projects to manage and have designated service leads.

To effectively manage the allocated pay and non-pay budgets, and to produce routine monitoring reports.
