Job overview

Are you an inspiring and progressive senior midwifery leader ready to shape the future of maternity care? Looking for the next step in your leadership journey? Passionate about delivering outstanding, personalised care in a dynamic and evolving environment?

We’re looking for a forward-thinking and compassionate Maternity Matron to join our team at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) — a modern and ambitious maternity service at the heart of Kent. Our service is committed to delivering safe, personalised, and high-quality care for women, birthing people, babies, and families.

At MTW, you’ll be part of a supportive, values-driven team that’s embracing innovation and transformation. Our maternity service includes:

  • A beautiful, purpose-built acute site with state-of-the-art facilities
  • Two stand-alone, midwifery-led birth centres
  • A dedicated community midwifery team covering a wide and diverse geographical area

We’re proud of our strong culture of continuous improvement, staff development, and investment in midwifery leadership. You’ll have access to exceptional training and research opportunities, as well as a voice in shaping the services of tomorrow.

If you're motivated to lead with vision, drive positive change, and empower midwives to deliver excellent care — we’d love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

We are excited to offer a permanent opportunity for a Birth Centre Matron to lead our two stand-alone midwifery-led birth centres. We're seeking a motivated, visionary and passionate midwife who is ready to embrace the challenge of a senior leadership role and make a meaningful impact on the future of maternity care in Kent.

You will bring substantial senior midwifery experience and proven leadership at Band 7 or above, with the confidence and credibility to step into a Band 8a Matron position. As a key member of our midwifery management team, you’ll be:

  • A resilient and compassionate leader who inspires confidence and trust
  • A clinically credible practitioner with a deep commitment to evidence-based, woman-centred care
  • A strategic thinker with the drive to help shape an Outstanding-rated maternity service

This is an exciting time to join us as we continue to innovate and grow. You’ll be working in a fast-paced, collaborative senior leadership team that values integrity, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.

If you’re ready to lead with purpose and passion, we would be delighted to hear from you. We strongly encourage informal conversations and site visits — come and see what makes MTW Maternity such a special place to work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check at Standard Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children).

All successful applicants will be required to complete our corporate trust induction once a start date had been agreed.

Following your corporate induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.
