Main duties of the job
Main Duties of the Role
- Provide personalised, continuous midwifery care during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individually tailored care plans for women/birthing people and their families, ensuring their diverse needs are recognised and respected.
- Practise autonomously as a midwife, delivering safe, evidence‑based care in line with local and national guidelines.
- Act as a positive clinical role model, demonstrating high standards of professional practice and behaviour at all times.
- Uphold the principles and requirements of The Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC, 2019).
- Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to promote high‑quality, holistic maternity care.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- To provide personalised, continuous antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal midwifery care. This will be achieved by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised programmes of care for women/birthing people and their families as an autonomous practitioner taking into consideration the diverse needs of women/birthing people and their families.
- To act as a clinical role model and practice autonomously within the parameters of
- local and national guidance and sphere of professional practice, adhering at all
- times to The Code - Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates. (NMC, 2019).
- To provide safe, evidence-based care throughout the maternity pathway assessing risks and deviations from normal and ensuring timely referral, intervention and escalation.
- To ensure information is communicated in a clear and unbiased way to women/birthing people to facilitate informed decision making.
- To maintain high standards of contemporaneous documentation within Trust guidelines and in accordance with the NMC code.
- To participate in the delivery of public health information in line with national guidance and government drivers.
- To liaise with and maintain good relationships and communication with midwifery colleagues, seeking advice and support from senior colleagues where appropriate.
- To liaise with the multidisciplinary team, health care groups and outside agencies as appropriate.
- To work flexibly across all maternity wards/settings as indicated by service needs.
- To provide midwifery advice to junior staff and students.
- To undertake and complete the trust preceptorship programme.
- To assist in quality improvement initiatives for the purpose of maintaining and improving the standards of midwifery care within the Trust.
- To be aware of and participate in the Trust clinical risk strategies, including guidelines and incident reporting.
- To participate in departmental team meetings and other committees when necessary.
- To escalate any concerns in relation to professional practice or patient safety to relevant person/agency.
- To enhance clinical skills in all aspects of midwifery to further own professional development and knowledge. This includes attendance on all mandatory study days.
- To maintain and develop own personal professional portfolio.
- To participate in Individual Performance Reviews and to agree objectives with the department manager
- To ensure adequate supplies of medical/surgical equipment, linen stores and other consumables are in place in the absence of the manager.
- To ensure that all equipment is in good working order, to have accessed training and have a knowledge of how to use it correctly.
- To liaise with the ward/department manager and report any changes or events which may affect patient care in their absence.
- To delegate and undertake other duties as appropriate and necessary in relation to the role.
Health and Safety/Risk Management
- The post holder must comply at all times with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the Trust’s Incident Reporting System.
- The post holder must demonstrate an awareness of the importance of practising self‑care to maintain emotional and physical wellbeing and should access support when required.

- The post holder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
- The post holder must maintain a continuum of personal and professional development in accordance with the NMC recommendations that meets the requirements of NMC revalidation
- The post holder must be proactive in their approach to self-development, taking responsibility for personal and professional development and maintaining professional registration.
Patient and Public Involvement
- All staff will be expected to comply with S.242 of the NHS Act 2006; ensuring that service users or their representatives are involved in everything to do with planning, provision and delivery of NHS services.
Respect for Patient Confidentiality
- The post holder should always respect patient confidentiality and not divulge patient information unless sanctioned by the requirements of the role, ensuring that national standards of information governance and the sharing of information are adhered to

Infection Prevention and Control
- All employees have a personal responsibility to comply with Trust and departmental Infection Prevention and Control policies to protect their own health, the health of patients, visitors and other employees and to prevent health care associated infections. This includes a requirement to maintain a safe, clean and tidy work environment and to complete mandatory Infection Prevention and Control training as provided by the Trust.
Safeguarding Children and Adults
- All employees have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and adults. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring they undertake the appropriate level of training in accordance with the safeguarding policy training strategy and that they are aware of and work within the safeguarding policies of the Trust
Communication & Working Relationships
- The post holder must have excellent communication skills. The role involves communicating amongst members of the multi-professional teams. They must be able to work across professional boundaries within the Trust and externally.
- The post holder will always ensure effective communication with clinical and managerial teams. They will be able to prioritise tasks appropriately, and work efficiently and effectively with a limited resource.
Special Working Conditions
- A flexible approach to work is required together with cross site travel and ability to provide care in a variety of settings in keeping with women’s choice and personalisation of care.
- May be required to work within a Continuity of Carer model providing care across all elements of the maternity pathway, helping to support and develop new ways of working to improve health outcomes and job satisfaction.
- The post holder must be able to meet the needs of a 24/7 service which includes shift work covering nights, weekends, bank holidays and on call models.
