Job overview

An exciting opportunity has come up to work within the Female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) based within St Ann's Hospital as a Mental Health Support Worker.

Haven Female PICU is a 5 bedded female PICU that provides a high level of effective and compassionate care to women who are experiencing the most acute phase of a serious mental disorder. This includes working with individuals presenting with psychotic disorders, mood disorders, complex trauma and personality disorders. We aim to promote a calm and therapeutic approach and environment where our patients are supported by a friendly, skilled and enthusiastic team that enables them to move forwards with their recovery.

We are currently looking for a confident, enthusiastic and caring worker who wishes to work in a fast paced and challenging environment. You will be part of a wonderful multi-disciplinary team that are friendly and passionate about providing the best experience for our service users.

With this role,  we expect availability to work shifts over the 7 day week, including night shifts.

Applications from candidates that require current Skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are unfortunately ineligible to apply for this position.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of.  Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

Main duties of the job

You will work within the multi-disciplinary team to provide care and treatment to patients detained under the Mental Health Act using a wide range of nursing interventions working within national guidelines.

The role includes:

  • Supporting the provision of care to meet patient's needs including physical, psychological and social
  • Ensuring the environment is safe and therapeutic when nursing patients with high risk behaviours
  • Implementing co-produced and individualised care plans and contribute to evaluation of these interventions
  • Lead on and engage patients in a variety of activities both on the ward and off the ward
  • Promote freedom of choice, autonomy and least restrictive practice, in a safe and therapeutic environment

If are keen on interacting with people, are passionate, have a listening ear, and are interested in learning new skills then we would like to hear from you.

Although experience working within healthcare, specifically mental health, is desirable, we would welcome individuals who do not have this experience. As a team, we can support you to develop yourself and your abilities in support of you becoming a skilled, competent and confident worker within PICU.

You will be required to undertake a Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course, and it is a condition of your employment that you successfully complete all aspects of this course; if this is not achieved you will not be able to commence working in the post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For the main duties and responsibilities for this role please read the attached job description and person specification.  When completing your application please ensure your supporting statement reflects the criteria set out in these documents by showing how your experience and skills apply to this post.

We understand that using AI can be a useful and supportive tool when completing your application.  However, we have also seen an increase in the over-reliance of AI tools which is negatively impacting applications as they remove candidate’s individuality, and it becomes much harder to get a sense of who you are and your authentic experience.  If you do use AI, it should be used to enhance your application and not to create your supporting statement in its entirety.  If we suspect you have used AI to create your supporting statement and this does not match your experience, we may withdraw your application.
