Job overview

We are a well established, ageless, Liaison Psychiatry Service based within Hull Royal infirmary whilst also covering Castle Hill Hospital.

The Mental Health Liaison Service currently delivers comprehensive mental health assessments, brief intervention, care planning and signposting/referral for patients who present to the A&E department or who have been admitted to hospital. The team works closely with many community services in order to help collaboratively serve the needs of those with mental health difficulties.

Common presentations include suicidal ideation, deliberate self-harm, depression, dementia, alcohol misuse and psychosis. Due to the demands of acute care medicine, urgent care and ED pressures the work is diverse and fast paced and the support workers play a pivotal role in this.

We recently opened a bespoke Emergency Department 'streaming area' which functions as a safe and therapeutic space for some patient's attending the Emergency department and awaiting assessment by MHLS.  As a Support, Time and Recovery worker you will be an integral part of this initiative.

The team operates on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis and it is essential that the post holder is able to work unsocial hours, including nightshifts and weekends on a pro rata basis.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated people who are flexible and have excellent inter-personal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers and staff.

You must be able to demonstrate a high standard of interpersonal skills including empathy, warmth and understanding and have a good knowledge of mental health issues, as well as excellent documentation skills. You must also be able to demonstrate experience of working with people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Main duties include:

  • Work alongside registered clinicians to deliver compassionate, person‑centred support to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties within the acute hospital environment.
  • Promote recovery, independence, and overall wellbeing through practical, recovery‑focused interventions.
  • Provide direct support to patients on wards and in emergency settings, helping them engage with care plans and clinical pathways.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional records in line with Trust policies and documentation standards.
  • Liaise effectively with internal teams and external services to ensure continuity of care and smooth transitions between hospital and community support.
  • Contribute to a safe, therapeutic environment by supporting risk management plans and escalating concerns appropriately.
