Main duties of the job

You will rotate through the  Dispensary, Ward services and Stores sections at both University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire and St Cross Hospital at Rugby, as well as our Aseptic department gaining experience and undertaking additional training if required.  Applicants should have good communication & organisational skills; be self-motivated and possess excellent interpersonal skills, be flexible and able to work well in an environment of change and transition. Applicants must also have good computer skills and be able to work well under pressure.  You must be willing to learn and take responsibility, working well within a diverse team consisting of Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants, Pharmacists, Nurses and Clerical staff. You will also be expected to develop good working relationships with other departments within the Pharmacy and Hospital.

You will work closely with the rest of the pharmacy team to provide high quality pharmaceutical care to all patients within the Trust, whether in a dispensary or ward based aspect.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Support the supply of pharmaceuticals including controlled drugs, aseptically prepared products and cytotoxics from the dispensary, pharmacy stores and pharmacy aseptic unit to patients, wards and departments against signed requisitions. This may include supporting dispensing and manufacturing and is carried out following departmental SOP’s and under the direct supervision of a technician or pharmacist.
  • Carry out the requisitioning, distribution (movement of stock) and receipt of stock in all pharmacy departments and on wards (ward replenishment incorporating Omnicell automated cabinets) utilising the stock control programme on the pharmacy management (computer) system.
  • Store and retrieve medication using both automated robots within the pharmacy department.
  • Receive into the department (this includes dispensary, stores and aseptic unit) work requests for patients and wards. Provide the patient or ward staff with appropriate information on how the drugs will be dispatched and the likely waiting time. Dealing with any basic queries concerning the supply of medication from patients or staff members, including phone queries, referring them to an appropriate member of the team to answer any clinical or technical queries.
  • Keep all work areas clean and tidy. Adhere to cleaning and hygiene procedures in the aseptic unit. Ensure stock is rotated and in date.
  • Following the ‘Returns and disposal of medicines in pharmacy’ SOP ensure all excess stock is removed from wards and returned to pharmacy stock.
  • Assist in basic clerical duties including filing and photocopying.
  • Work flexibly across all of pharmacy departments including Rugby St Cross, covering the work of colleagues during peak periods or absence.
  • Participate in appropriate training and development activities including your own personal development and participate in the education and training of colleagues.
  • Participate in Personal Development Reviews (PDRs) and work to achieve agreed set objectives.
