Applications are invited for a Medical Retina Fellowship in Ophthalmology based at Royal Berkshire Hospital and Prince Charles Eye Unit, starting in November 2025 for a period of 12 months in the first instance.

This post is suited to doctors who are post-CCT (or equivalent) and wish to pursue a career in medical retina, especially those preparing for a substantive consultant appointment.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic, multi-site team delivering high-volume retinal services across Berkshire. There will also be opportunities to participate in service improvement, teaching, audit, and research, aligned with departmental objectives and the appointee's interests.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will work under the supervision of the Medical Retina Consultant team and will be actively involved in:

  • Running and supporting medical retina clinics, including for diabetic retinopathy, AMD, vein occlusions, and inherited retinal disorders.
  • Delivering and supervising intravitreal injection clinics in RBH/WBCH/PCEU (depending on service demand)
  • Interpreting and reviewing retinal imaging (OCT, FFA, ICGA, widefield imaging).
  • Participating in laser clinics, including PRP, focal/grid and YAG laser
  • Supporting Eye Casualty and acute ophthalmology services on a rotational basis.
  • Participating in the first on-call rota (currently 1 in 13).
  • Providing prospective cover to ward round when trainees attending monthly Deanery teaching
  • Taking part in weekly case reviews, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting the teaching of junior doctors, students, and allied professionals.

The fellow will be expected to contribute to inpatient care, emergency ophthalmology, and general ophthalmology clinics, depending on service needs and training objectives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This fellowship offers structured exposure to medical retina within a digitally integrated and forward-thinking department. The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust operates across several sites and provides care to a population of approximately 1 million people.

Key elements of the post include:

  • Developing advanced competence in managing routine and complex retinal conditions.
  • Gaining experience in PRP, micropulse, and focal/grid laser treatments.
  • Contributing to a paperless service using Medisoft integrated with Cerner Millennium EPR.
  • Participating in clinical governance, monthly audit meetings, and compliance with Trust policies.
  • Engaging in continuing professional development (CPD), appraisal, and reflective learning.
  • Supporting departmental education through tutorials, journal clubs, and teaching sessions.

The department hosts multiple specialist consultants and offers care from the main Reading site, the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor, and outreach clinics in Bracknell, Henley, and Newbury. Dedicated intravitreal injection suites, lasers, and imaging technologies are available at all major sites.

The appointee will be encouraged to pursue audit, research, and may have opportunities to contribute to publications or presentations depending on interest and initiative.
