The Medical P.A. is key to the efficient management of the consultant firm. Patient access to healthcare professionals and subsequent treatment planning in the specialist hospital setting relies upon well-co-ordinated organisational and administrative support.

- The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Medical P.A. service. They will liaise with all colleagues within the multidisciplinary team, and with internal departments and external agencies to ensure the continuity of patient treatment.
- To act as the first point of contact for users of the service, and to proactively deal with telephone enquiries from patients, their Carers, GPs and colleagues in other hospitals in a professional manner.
- To process new patient referrals within Trust and nationally agreed time frames, enabling compliance with quality standards for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
- To pro-actively liaise with the Senior Sister and clerical supervisors within Out Patients to ensure effective clinic management (for example, cancelling, reducing and overbooking clinic lists.)
- To make travel arrangements on behalf of the Consultant(s) in accordance with Trust policies, and to arrange accommodation for visiting doctors as required.
- To take minutes at meetings as required, and to keep records of Consultant and junior medical staff leave.
- To prepare lecture notes and slides for presentations, and type research papers as required.
- To provide reciprocal cover in the absence of Medical P.A. and Medical Secretary colleagues as reasonably requested by management.
