An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, based at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, for full-time Medical Laboratory Assistant positions within the Blood Sciences Pathology Department.

  • 2 × 37.5-hour permanent positions
  • 2 × 37.5-hour fixed-term positions (12 months)

This is an important role supporting the Pathology Department and would suit individuals who enjoy a varied workload. Experience of computer data input is essential, and applicants should be able to demonstrate current IT skills.

Candidates should be literate and numerate. GCSE Grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English would be advantageous, as would previous laboratory or healthcare experience and familiarity with medical terminology.

Hours: The majority of work is undertaken between 09:00 and 21:00. There is also a requirement to participate in the out-of-hours rota, including late shifts, weekends, and Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be expected to work as part of the multidisciplinary Blood Sciences laboratory team following appropriate training and completion of the relevant in-house competencies.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, your main role will be to support Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Assistants in the processing and analysis of laboratory samples. Duties will include the receipt and processing of a wide variety of biological specimens. You will also receive training in phlebotomy, including taking blood samples from patients.

  • good manual dexterity
  • strong computer skills, including accurate recording of patient information
  • the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • excellent communication skills

The main responsibilities of the successful candidates will include:

  • receipt and processing of pathology samples
  • entering patient requests onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • assisting in the provision of the phlebotomy service for both inpatients and outpatients
  • accurate use of calibrated pipettes
  • loading, unloading, and filing of samples
  • housekeeping duties and maintaining Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards
  • handling referred work to and from other laboratories
  • communicating results and responding to queries from service users via telephone and other communication methods
