A permanent vacancy has arisen within the Estates & Facilities Directorate for an experienced and motivated Mechanical Technician to join Barts Health NHS Trust. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong plumbing or HVAC background who are looking to advance their careers within a highly specialised and supportive hospital environment.

Working across St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals, you will play a key role in maintaining the mechanical infrastructure that keeps our world‑class clinical services running safely and efficiently.

As a member of the Hospitals Mechanical team, you will have:

  • Opportunity to work with complex HVAC systems, medical gases, heating plant, chilled water systems, and specialist ventilation supporting theatres and critical care.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across a wide range of mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults on plumbing, HVAC and associated mechanical plant.
  • Undertake testing, inspection and statutory compliance activities (e.g., pressure systems, water hygiene tasks).
  • Support minor installation works across the retained estate.
  • Ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with relevant regulations and Health & Safety guidance.

Candidates will be required to have:

  • A formally recognised mechanical qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Completed apprenticeship in Mechanical, Plumbing, HVAC or Building Services Engineering.
  • Experience in mechanical installation, maintenance or engineering — healthcare experience desirable but not essential.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail and pride in the quality of your workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet shared goals.
  • Good communication skills and a proactive, customer‑focused approach.
