Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Trust Cancer Flow & Performance Team for an Administrative and Patient Navigation service to the Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Teams.

The Cancer Flow & Performance Team are responsible for the collection, collation and reporting of nationally mandated cancer datasets. The team work closely with members of the cancer multi-disciplinary teams to prospectively manage patients along their cancer pathway, committed to achieving quality cancer services for all patients in accordance with national objectives and standards.  Multi Disciplinary Teams (MDT) provide a specialist decision making process in a weekly meeting, reviewing all relevant diagnostic tests, radiology, histology and medical data in order to plan appropriate treatment for those patients diagnosed with cancer.

The MDT Administrator is an integral part of this team responsible for ensuring this happens in an organised fashion, liaising with all relevant departments, clinical and non-clinical personnel. The post holder will also be required to work with clinical teams and the supporting cancer information staff to capture and provide accurate and timely data to meet national standards. They will identify patients who may breach national cancer pathway standards and take appropriate action to negate this.

Please note this role does not have any patient contact and is purely administrative.

Main duties of the job

You will be a highly motivated and organised individual working autonomously for the majority of the time, supporting your clinical team by facilitating the weekly Cancer MDT meetings. You will ensure that all the relevant clinical documentation/reports are available to allow the team to have full discussion of patients’ diagnosis and treatment options, which you are required to capture and record accurately within the Somerset Cancer Register so attention to detail is paramount. You will be required to live-type in the weekly Cancer MDT meetings so proficiency in typing is desirable.

You will have a knowledge of NHS systems, utilising these to collate the information required to support and navigate the cancer patient journey. You will develop knowledge of the various cancer tumour specific pathways and gain an understanding of the national standards relevant to cancer waiting times. This will enable you to monitor the patient journey. Using various reports, you will ensure that investigations are arranged in a timely way, expediting these on occasion to prevent patient breaches of the cancer waiting times standards. You will liaise with both clinical and non clinical members of staff both internally and externally to the organization so good communication skills are essential.
