Job overview

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking an experienced Virtual Ward Matron (Band 8a) to provide senior clinical and operational leadership across our high-acuity virtual ward services, alongside oversight of the Discharge Lounge at St Mary’s Hospital.

This is a pivotal leadership role supporting system transformation, improved patient flow and the delivery of safe, hospital-level care in patients’ own homes through digital and remote monitoring models.

You will have continuous responsibility for service quality, workforce leadership, clinical governance and performance across multiple virtual ward pathways. Working closely with divisional leaders and system partners, you’ll drive service improvement, manage resources effectively and promote a culture of safety, learning and compassionate care.

You’ll bring strong experience in managing teams and complex clinical services, with excellent communication, operational and change-management skills. Experience in Acute Medicine, Virtual Wards or Hospital at Home services is desirable.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for overall operational management of the service, aligned to divisional and Trust strategic objectives and relevant business plans.
  • Responsible for supporting clinical leads and operational teams to ensure services are delivered within the clinical governance framework.
  • Ensure nursing practices comply with Trust procedural documents.
  • To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the ward team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.
  • Lead the teaching, supervision and continuous assessment of all learners, delegating as appropriate. Provide a quality learning environment for all staff including medical and others.
  • Ensure all mandatory study days are attended and that accurate records are maintained.
  • Maintain registration with the NMC and adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Act as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including system partners and commissioners.
