Main duties of the job

We are looking for individuals who are motivated, enthusiastic and have a distinct passion for caring for woman, babies, and their families; to support compassionate holistic care across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.

The postholder will undertake clinical tasks such as venepuncture of adults, neonatal capillary blood sampling via heel prick and Newborn Blood Screening tests as well as undertaking and recording both maternal and neonatal observations and escalating to Midwife, Nurse or Doctor should concerns be identified.

You will be able to provide public health information to parents and families around immunisations, screening, healthy pregnancy advice and safe sleeping

As a Maternity Support Worker, you will have a key role to support women in their chosen method of infant feeding in line with UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiatives and the practical skills required to care for a baby; these include, skin to skin, positioning and attachment, hand expression, the use of a breast pump and preparing artificial feeds and equipment. It is an incredibly special time in the first few days when a family has grown and this position offers the privilege to support relationships to develop as families bond.

  • To provide safe and effective care during all stages of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period to women and babies under the indirect supervision of a registered practitioner

Job Purpose

  • The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to birth person centred care. The Midwife is ultimately responsible for the birth person and their baby (s), and it is under direct or in-direct supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides clinical care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.
  • The employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. These settings may include antenatal inpatient or outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care and postnatal inpatient and community care.
