The primary role of a Maternity Support Worker is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the Registered Midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to person-centred care.

The Maternity Support Worker should actively contribute to the health and well-being of patients, staff and service users and be able to communicate effectively with sensitivity and compassion. They should be able to work independently within their sphere of nursing while under the supervision of registered midwives.

The Maternity Support Worker should demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific skills and tasks delegated by the registered midwife and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies at UHNM.

Main duties of the job

As a Maternity Support Worker you may be required to carry out and perform a range of clinical based skills in conjunction with the above key areas/tasks.

These Skills have been pre-mapped and approved by UHNM for this role and will be supported by completion of a robust UHNM competency package that will be accompanied by education packages delivered by both the Care Coach Team and other UHNM educators across the trust who specialise in the training of these specific skills.

These skills include: •    Taking Clinical Observations and Recording on Vitals/Paper •    Venepuncture •    Glucose Monitoring •    Pregnancy Testing •    Urine Analysis (Strip) •    Taking Fecal Samples •    Carry out 12 lead ECG •    Observing patients for signs of agitation or distress (Clinical holding/Restraint) •    Wound Observation •    Simple Wound Dressing •    Removal of Peripheral Cannula •    Take Swabs (e.g. MRSA) •    Support and Assist New Staff- Buddy System/Care Certificate Supervisor (Training available via ESR)
