At Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, we have fantastic new opportunities for a Maternity Support Worker to join our Multi-Professional Team, within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birth Centre, in its deliverance of high quality care to our women/birthing people and their families.

If you have the experience below, we would like your help in supporting women/birthing people and their families in a home-from-home environment.

We have beautiful spacious birthing rooms and a five-bedded induction suite. Your role will involve being supportive of both women/birthing people and midwives. We have a small team of staff who rely on each other for help and support.

You MUST:

  • Have previous maternity/ paediatric experience of at least 1 year (NOT work experience) to be considered for this role.
  • Be an existing Band 3
  • Be able to work independently providing care for low-risk women/birthing people
  • Be able to perform neonatal observations and recognise deviations from normal.
  • Be competent in providing breast feeding support
  • Be keen to be part of a family-focussed maternity team

This role comprises working within a Multi – Professional Team delivering high quality care to women/birthing people and their families,including providing care and support to postnatally,  phlebotomy, breast feeding support and advice, and maintenance of essential equipment.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be required to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within all clinical areas i.e. cleaning delivery rooms, theatre, equipment, making beds and keeping a good stock supply.
  • You will assist the midwives in the care of women/birthing people antenatally, during labour and postnatally to ensure that planned programmes of care are provided.
  • ou Yill participate in the provision of 24-hour cover for the unit, including flexibility to move within team areas as the service requires.
  • You will participate in maintaining the general personal hygiene needs of clients where required.
  • You will assist in the provision food and drink if required.
  • You will be aware of the general condition and wellbeing of women/birthing people and babies by close observation and report any deviation from the norm immediately to a qualified member of the multi-professional team.
  • You will provide appropriate advice, within your level of knowledge, to parents on aspects of parenting in relation to the baby’s wellbeing and safety.
  • You will be pro-active in supporting clients in feeding their babies and give them the advice and assistance they require according to the national and trust guidelines.
  • You will maintain accurate records of all care provision in the clinical records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assist the midwives in the delivery of care to women/birthing people in the hospital and community setting. The post holder carries a defined range of duties delegated by and reported back registered member of the multi-professional team.

The MSW is able to work regularly without direct supervision, reports any concerns, change in the condition of the woman/birthing person and baby and highlights incidents to the midwife responsible for care.

Duties and responsibilities for the role will be discussed and agreed on a daily basis with the midwife in charge, with communication channels open throughout the day for further advice and support.
