Job overview

The post holder is required to work with the multi-disciplinary team at the Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospital, facilitate statutory and Mandatory training and education within the Midwifery and Maternity Support workers team; and ensure training is collated and reported at local and Trust levels.

The post holder will be expected to autonomously provide expert high quality practice based learning by teaching and assessing practice-based skills whilst supporting the Trusts governance agenda within the maternity practice development team.

To take day to day responsibility and be accountable for leading on skill development for post registration midwives and other non-registered health care professionals.

To identify and provide training and education programmes to support the development of skills, knowledge and attitude required to ensure the delivery of competent, high quality midwifery care.

To act as a role model, expert practitioner and promote normality within the service.

To promote a clinical practice environment that values education and development by team members

To also undertake the role of the midwife.

Also accepts that as a senior midwife and a member of the Maternity Services senior team will ensure that they act in a professional manner and lead by example at all times.

Participate when required in the maternity bleep rota.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

Plan and devise clinical teaching sessions inclusive of personal development programmes for staff to support and develop all midwifery staff in their roles in the delivery of care in the specified clinical setting.

To teach and ensure competency of midwives clinical skills inclusive of IV Cannulation, IV drug administration, suturing, low risk intrapartum skills, high risk intrapartum skills inclusive of HDU, obstetric skills and drills. To ensure compliance with core competencies inclusive of venepuncture, blood transfusion and ANTT..

Lead on all clinical teaching inclusive of live simulation in the practice area with the multi-disciplinary team.

Use a variety of appropriate teaching and learning strategies to promote learning and reflection on practice, which involves working as a practitioner alongside midwives and non-registered health care professionals providing direct care to women and babies.

Ensure that all teaching material is evidenced based and in line with trust guidelines and policies, suggesting and promoting change for best practice. Promote evidence based care and best practice whilst supporting and teaching in clinical practice.

Make recommendations regarding future education needs in response to a changing NHS agenda.

Provide strong leadership within the midwifery clinical area, acting as a role model for midwives.
