Job overview

This post is fixed term for 24 months to meet the needs of the service.

We are looking for an experienced cancer nurse to develop our service to support people with metastatic breast cancer. This is the first breast metastatic nurse role within the health board which will significantly improve experience for our patients. You will be pivotal in shaping and promoting the direction of this service. Although based in Aneurin Bevan Health Board, you will form strong links with Velindre Cancer Centre, to manage and contribute to the metastatic breast service across SE Wales.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced nurse who has either worked directly with breast cancer or has worked as a cancer CNS in another speciality.  The role offers a mix of developing a service alongside clinical duties which makes it perfect for an experienced and motivated nurse who is forward thinking and enthusiastic about improving care.

The role will enable a more equitable and rapid service to our patients with metastatic breast cancer resulting in significant improvement in holistic patient care. The role will cover Royal Gwent Hospital, The Grange University Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, and oncology clinics at Velindre Cancer Centre.

The post holder will work as a highly skilled practitioner, with expert knowledge, be a competent clinical nurse with the ability to develop a new service.

Main duties of the job

Develop a service which promotes the highest standard of care and support for metastatic breast patients, from the time of diagnosis through treatment, rehabilitation and beyond.

Set out a project plan to pilot and evaluate the benefits and fit of the role.

Undertake evaluation of unmet needs of breast metastasis patients, and design services to reduce these.

Use a holistic assessment approach in identifying patients concerns from which person-centred care plan is compiled with the patient.

Pilot nurse led clinics

Develop a timely informative and supportive service to patients, family and carers.

Build links with tertiary, 3rd sector and other providers of services.

Provide leadership in clinical practice for professional teams and peers ensuring an effective learning experience across the primary and secondary care interface.

Prepare a report on the benefits of the role and make recommendations for future services.
