We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated nurse to join our Lung Cancer Screening Programme. You will be expected to provide support, information and advice to patients undergoing lung health assessments and liaise with colleagues and wider health care community. The ideal candidate will have post registration experience working in Respiratory Medicine, cancer or community settings.

Part of the role will require face to face clinics in the Staffordshire area with the base being at the Bridge Centre Birches Head.

Main duties of the job

  • To use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills with patients while reviewing them in the ‘virtual’, primary and secondary care setting
  • Will provide empathy and reassurance regarding the sensitive nature of the information being relayed to them
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with difficult situations
  • To act as a resource to provide specialist knowledge and expertise to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support the provision of helpline services run from the hub by resolving queries referred by them to the screening centre
  • To provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the screening centre

  • Be responsible for care delivery to patients identified by the screening programme and meet the needs of patients arising as a result of:
  • Having been called to participate in screening
  • Having been identified as potential requiring a CT on screening
  • Needing to be able to make informed decision prior to undergoing screening
  • Having been identified as requiring further intervention, treatment, surveillance follow up or discharge and liaising with the GP/Hospital as necessary
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate care according to the lung screening programme guidelines and in line with local policies and procedures
  • Has the dexterity and accuracy required to effectively manage role and responsibility
  • Requires standard keyboard skills to fulfil data input, educational and research requirements for the role.
  • Assesses and implements specialist nursing care programmes and advises patients and relatives.
  • The post holder will deliver on the programmes agreed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)/ recommendations for Lung Cancer Screening offering specialist advice, appropriate co-ordinated pathways of patient care, appropriate expert investigation, treatment and follow-up.
  • The post holder will act as a specialist in the field of Lung Cancer, collaborating with all members of the multi-professional team.  The individual will provide highly specialised nursing knowledge and expertise on the various aspects of care for patients through the pathway.
  • To provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the screening centre.
  • Contributes to the development of specialist protocols
  • To ensure that all practice conforms to the current written protocols and policies and maintenance of quality standards of care for own areas of specialist responsibility.
  • To help maintain and further develop a University Hospital of North Midlands NHS multi-professional Lung Cancer Screening Team.
  • To be involved with the development of information booklets and leaflets, under the supervision of the team leader, for staff, patients and carers.
  • To manage resources effectively to meet service requirements.
  • Participate in Education awareness sessions as identified by the Lung Cancer Lead Nurse for patients and Trust staff.
  • To establish effective links with local health and lung Cancer teams in order to ensure that adequate training and education is implemented across the health economy.
  • Update client/patient records
  • To populate and maintain the lung Cancer database, iPortal structured notes, including all interim systems.
  • To maintain adequate confidential records of all patients and ensure that all relevant information is documented appropriately.
  • To ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times, in conjunction with the Trust’s Confidentiality Policy.  Any matters of a confidential nature relating to the identity, diagnosis and treatment of patients, individual staff records or details or contract prices and terms must, under no circumstances be divulged to unauthorised person(s).  Breaches of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action, which may result in dismissal.

Undertakes research, clinical trials and assists in clinical audit in work area

  • Participate in, or facilitate, patient involvement in clinical studies and trails and to assist in data collection when required.
  • Support and maintain opportunities for research activities, facilitating collaborative multidisciplinary research projects within the speciality within the Trusts Clinical Governance and Research Framework Programme.
  • To support the Lung Cancer Screening Team Leader in disseminating current research findings and good practice to professional colleagues through publications and presentations.
  • Undertake and be actively involved in quality monitoring clinical benchmarking and audit programmes.
  • Support the Team Leader and Directorate Manger in the development of performance reports to the national Lung Screening Office, strategic groups and the wider health community
  • The post holder will maintain their own clinics, assessing the needs of patients, planning, implementing and evaluating care according to the Lung Cancer guidelines and in line with local policies and procedures.
  • The post holder will act as a pivotal role with the support of the team leader, will liaise with other healthcare professionals, including the Health Promotion Co-Ordinator in Primary Health Care Team.
  • Not directly supervised, required to act independently within operational guidelines -referring to their manager/ team leader when necessary
  • The post holder Regularly uses a VDU for inputting patient information and general data entry.
  • The Post holder will Occasional need to assist / manoeuvre patients within clinical setting.
  • Concentration on patient assessments / schedule of visits
  • The post holder will assess patients for their suitability / desire to undergo further procedures such as a CT
  • Ensure timely access to screening CT
  • The post holder may be required to travel within different GP, Mobile CT areas/ locations
