Locum Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine
This is a fixed term post for up to 9 months to cover maternity leave.
This post will develop and improve the stroke services in Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.
Currently stroke services are being provided at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital with two wards dedicated to acute stroke admissions (ASU)and step down rehabilitation. There is also further provision for rehabilitation beds in the community.
There is a full stroke MDT who work closely together for the best of their patients, including an Early Supported Discharge team, Community neurorehabilitation, and video fluoroscopy. There is a 24/7 Stroke Consultant led thrombolysis, access to thrombectomy via University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and Southmead Hospital in Bristol, daily TIA clinics, neuroradiology meetings, and MDT teaching. The ASU has a full complement of resident doctors including foundation doctors, CMTs, grade doctors and COTE / Acute Medicine Specialist Trainees along with an experienced team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will help provide a service within the speciality of stroke medicine to Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness in Stroke Medicine.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with Consultant colleagues will have
responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan of the Health Board.
The post holder will be expected to participate in a non-resident 1 in 6 stroke thrombolysis and thrombectomy on call covering the acute stroke sites in CTMUHB. This on call is done remotely and IT equipment will be provided.
The post holder will have the opportunity to act as educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff assigned to them, thus overseeing their training and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their careers.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The post holder will, with clinical colleagues, provide a service in the speciality to patients within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, with the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness in Stroke Medicine. The post holder will provide leadership in the field of Stroke Medicine and work with a multi professional team providing specialist Stroke Medicine care throughout the UHB.
- The post holder will rotate with other stroke consultants to provide care for the ASU, TIA clinics (4 new patients per clinic), review of stroke patients at the front door in ED and outpatient clinics (2 new patients and 6 follow ups per clinic)
- The post holder will be supported by the Clinical Director for Stroke Medicine, the Unscheduled Care Care Group, Consultant colleagues and a full complement of resident doctors including Foundation Doctors, IMTs, Staff Grade doctors and SpRs.
- The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care, allowing proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the procedures, operational policy and strategic plans of the HB (as amended from time to time)
- Provide support to community nurses and Early Supported Discharge team in order to ensure holistic, integrated working in the primary-secondary care interface.
- The post holder will be required to participate in the UHB risk management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department and the UHB. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in research and development in line with UHB, and NHS priorities
- The post holder will be expected to participate in job appraisal and review and be committed to the revalidation process. The health board is committed to supporting consultant medical staff with appraisal and revalidation.
- The post holder will be expected to formulate a personal development plan in conjunction with the Clinical Director to identify training and development needs.
- The post holder will also be expected to participate in the stroke thrombolysis rota, and will be provided with IT equipment to review CT images from home.
- Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required to undertake such duties.
