Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Radiologist in PET / CT imaging, working 4 sessions per week, available from 10th February 2025.

The post will support the rapidly expanding clinical PET/CT service at PETIC based at University Hospital of Wales. PETIC is a combined production and scanning facility for PET imaging and aims to provide the highest quality clinical service as well as excellence in pre-clinical and clinical research. The post also includes a commitment to the regional South Wales neuroendocrine MDT and prior experience or knowledge of NET MDT and/or gallium dotatate PET/CT is desirable.

Applicants should preferably be on the Specialist Register at time of interview. A requirement of any applicant is sub-specialist training in nuclear medicine and PET imaging. Holding a general NM and PET ARSAC practitioner licence is desirable. Independent competence in PET / CT reporting is essential.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.  The basic salary for this post is £46,640 per annum for a 4-session commitment.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full.  In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The main duty of this post is to provide clinical PET / CT reporting for PETIC which is owned and operated by Cardiff University, in close partnership with Cardiff and Vale UHB

Whilst the main duty of this post is to provide clinical PET / CT reporting, an important aspect is to provide clinical cover to the PET / CT service, to deal with queries from radiographers and referring clinical teams. In some instances, the appointee will be asked to vet / authorise PET / CT referrals in rare instances when the main “gatekeepers” are not available.

PETIC is the only fixed site for PET imaging in Wales. It serves all South East Wales for body FDG imaging and the whole of South Wales for Brain dementia and Epilepsy Imaging. We also provide supra regional imaging for paediatric oncology especially for the South West of England.

PETIC currently performs approximately 4000 clinical PET CT scans per year with a 20% compound year on year growth.

Teaching is a key part of our work and we train medical students via special study modules, host “taster” prospective radiology trainees, trainee core radiology trainees in the basics of PET imaging and train higher radiology trainees in radionuclide radiology. The appointee will be encouraged to contribute to all of these activities.  There are regular PETIC / All Wales REALM meetings as well as regular teaching sessions for the higher trainees. The appointee will be encouraged to participate in departmental audits.
