Barts Health NHS Trust   Barts Cancer Centre   Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist – GI and AOS Cancer  Advert We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist to join our existing site-specialist multidisciplinary teams in the field of GI Cancers. This is a fixed-term post for 12 months based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the Barts Cancer Centre. The successful candidate will join a well-established medical oncology team and play a key role in developing cancer services across the Trust. The posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and welcoming consultant team, and to develop new models of care/services that support the people in north-east London and beyond.   The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective care. This post is advertised as a full-time 10 PA position; a reduced timetable would need to be requested prior to appointment for consideration by the Clinical Director.   You require full registration with the General Medical Council with the licence to practice

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high-quality evidence-based Medical Oncology service, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Leadership, development, and organisation of the services in their charge in line with Trust / Divisional business plans. Full participation in the management of the Barts Cancer Centre (BCC). Liaison and communication with the Divisional Manager, General Manager and Associate Director of Nursing
  • To develop his/her own interests and specialties within oncology, including active participation in research programmes.
  • To have corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.
  • To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the NHS Cancer Plan, the Improving Outcomes reports and National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance reports.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To contribute to the provision of comprehensive, efficient and high-quality care throughout the treatment and management pathway of patients with cancer needs.
  • The postholder will play an active role in supporting the post-take review of those cancer patients admitted to Barts Hospital via the Clinical Assessment Unit
  • The postholder will give advice and guidance to clinicians and patients on acute oncological care planning. They will facilitate and establish effective communication pathways and record keeping ensuring those involved in the patient’s care are informed regarding emergency presentations and actions taken.
  • To provide, with colleagues, day to day care and supervision of oncology inpatients as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To provide, with colleagues, a referral service for inpatients under the care of other clinical departments in the Trust, who are diagnosed with or develop cancer-related complications during their inpatient stay.
  • To provide, with colleagues, an emergency referral service for inpatients at other hospital sites within ‘London Cancer’ that develop cancer-related complications during their inpatient stay.
  • To provide, with colleagues, clinical care and supervision of patients in the Oncology department.
  • To provide, with colleagues, clinical care and supervision of patients attending the Paget Oncology Day Unit (ward 7A).
  • To provide the Medical Oncology support to the Barts Health GI Cancer Unit and to attend the appropriate weekly Multidisciplinary meetings
