Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Stroke and General Neurology to join the Comprehensive Stroke Service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking clinician with a strong interest in hyperacute care and telemedicine to lead in the continued development of our innovative Pre-Hospital Video Triage (PVT) service.

You will have a chance to work in a well-established stroke services, alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team including neurologists, stroke physicians, neurorehabilitation specialists, and academic leaders in stroke research. The successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of our 24/7 consultant-led PVT model, supervise junior clinical staff, and support the expansion of the service across  London.

The role also includes outpatient responsibilities, with regular participation in specialist stroke clinics tailored to the candidate’s interests and expertise. You will be expected to contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, and teaching activities, and will be supported in pursuing research or grant opportunities linked to the PVT service and stroke innovation.

This is an exciting chance to help shape a high-impact, nationally relevant model of stroke care. You will work closely with service leads, operational managers, and ambulance services to deliver safe, timely, and effective care to patients before they even reach hospital.

Main duties of the job

This role will focus on the delivery and continued development of the Pre-Hospital Video Triage (PVT) service within the Comprehensive Stroke Service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). The successful candidate will provide consultant-level input to a 24/7 telemedicine model that supports early stroke identification and triage across London, working closely with ambulance services, stroke fellows, and nurse practitioners. In addition to PVT responsibilities, the post includes a weekly specialist stroke clinic, with opportunities to contribute to the TIA and Neurology Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) pathways, depending on service needs.

The post holder will require strong clinical expertise in stroke and general neurology, along with a proactive, collaborative approach to service delivery and innovation. Experience in teaching, service improvement, or research is desirable, as the role includes contributing to clinical supervision, governance activity, and development of the evidence base supporting the PVT model.
