Main duties of the job

The outpatient service runs in tandem with a well established and highly regarded orthodontic department, facilitating multidisciplinary working. The department comprises 2 dedicated surgeries (with piped nitrous oxide sedation) with access to a large 4-chair polyclinic. Assessment and treatment under local anaesthetic and inhalation sedation is provided with access to a dedicated, experienced sedation trained paediatric dental therapist. The service has been involved in the trial of a nitrous oxide destruction unit to reduce nitrous oxide waste emissions as part of the hospital’s zero net strategy. The department has its own portable xray machine and dental microscope. There is a dedicated Xray department on the floor with CBCT scanner which allows for same day CBCT scans to be performed. There is an on site laboratory which can produce removable appliances for patients and well established link with an external laboratory for provision of indirect restorations and bridgework.

Regular oral rehabilitation general anaesthetic (including minor oral surgery) operating lists run in both day surgery and main theatres – the latter for the more medically complex patients. The team has an excellent working relationship with paediatric anaesthetic, surgical and medical colleagues across the trust and beyond, collaborating for joint cases where possible.
