Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum 10 PAs Consultant post based within the Clinical Neurophysiology Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. This post is initially a 6-month fixed term contract with the possibility of an extension upon the agreement of both parties. The successful candidate will supplement the existing Consultant Clinical Neurophysiology team providing a broad range of Clinical Neurophysiology investigations for children and will cover the following main areas of Departmental activity: EEG, EMG, telemetry/HVT and intra-operative neurophysiology.

We are the largest paediatric neurological centre in the UK and the principal provider of specialist child neurology services, both emergency and elective, for the North Thames region and the surrounding counties. The Clinical Neurophysiology Department provides support for specialities within the Brain Directorate (Epilepsy, Neuromuscular, Neurosurgery, Neurodisability, Metabolic & Endocrine) as well other Trust and external specialities, including Intensive Care (PICU, CICU, NICU) and the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is a postgraduate teaching hospital, linked with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH). The Trust has 368 beds and provides a comprehensive range of paediatric specialties for tertiary level care.

Main duties of the job

Aims and Objectives The Department aims to determine the best techniques for demonstrating abnormalities of the physiology of the nervous system in children and uses these to aid diagnosis, guide treatment and inform prognosis. There are five major areas of activity - General EEG, Evoked Potentials, Telemetry, Intra-Operative Monitoring and Peripheral Neurophysiology (‘EMG’).

General EEG - covers referrals for conventional scalp recordings most commonly for the diagnosis and classification of seizures. Around 175 EEGs are performed per month. Around 25% of these are recordings on the Intensive Care Units.  An acute diagnostic service is also provided in the Rapid Access Neurological Unit (RANU), with either extended EEG recordings or urgent NCS/EMG studies.

Evoked potentials - Visual, somatosensory and brainstem auditory evoked potential studies are performed in both inpatient and outpatient settings for a variety of different indications.

Inpatient Telemetry - is situated on Koala ward.  There is also a home video telemetry (HVT) service providing diagnostic video-EEG for children in and around London which has the capacity to undertake two assessments per week.
