Post 1: Locum Consultant in Neonatal Medicine and Neonatal Transport (PaNDR): available from as soon as possible for 6 months

Post 2: Locum Consultant in Neonatal Medicine and Neonatal Transport (PaNDR): available from 20 July 2026 until 20 July 2027

Post 3: Locum Consultant in Neonatal Medicine (8PA’s): available from as soon as possible for 12 months

Main duties of the job

The appointees will provide Consultant clinical leadership and specialist advice for the Neonatal Service and for PaNDR. PaNDR is a consultant-led service with consultant involvement in all aspects of service delivery. You will also provide Consultant delivered transport shifts.

The Neonatal Unit in Cambridge is one of three tertiary level units in the East of England Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. The unit currently operates at 40 cots (28 ITU/HDU and 12 SCBU) with just under 6,000 inborn deliveries. As well as comprehensive neonatal intensive care, the unit provides a service for the high risk maternal and fetal medicine teams, specialist neonatal surgery and neurosurgery. We have close links with the rest of the network including two other tertiary units.

You will be fully registered with the GMC or be be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a friendly and enthusiastic team including clinicians, highly experienced Nurses, Specialty Registrars and fellows, dedicated ambulance technicians and the Emergency Bed Finding Service (EBS).

The Neonatal service offers the full range of Neonatal intensive care facilities including neonatal surgery, Neonatal Neurosurgery and Neonatal neurocritical care.

PaNDR incorporates both the Neonatal Retrieval Service and the Paediatric Retrieval Service for the whole of the East of England. PaNDR completes over 1200 neonatal transfers per year with over 600 emergency transfers and receives referrals from the 17 hospitals across the East of England and beyond. We are one of the busiest teams in the UK.

The appointees will provide Consultant clinical service, clinical leadership, specialist advice and multidisciplinary management for the neonatal unit and for the Neonatal Retrieval Service.

The Neonatal Unit in Cambridge is one of three tertiary level units in the East of England Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.  We have close links with the rest of the network including two other tertiary units. We also have close links with CUH Perinatal services and the University Department of Paediatrics.

CUH, together with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Foundation Trust and Cambridge University are well on the way in developments to build a new Cambridge Children’s Hospital. Work is underway with the building expected to open in 2031.
