University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Locum Consultant in Colorectal Surgery for 12 months from August 2025.

Based at Royal Derby Hospital, the colorectal department provides a full range of inpatient elective and non-elective operating services, outpatient clinics and day case facilities.

There are currently 9 Lower Gastrointestinal surgeons based within the unit,  supported by a team of speciality doctors, fellows, registrars, junior doctors and clinical nurse specialists.

TAMIS, TEO, SILS and robotic surgery have been established within the Colorectal department. Our unit also offers ELAPE, complex IBD work/pouch surgery, complex endometriosis/advanced ovarian cancer (joint surgery with gynae-oncologist).  The Royal Derby Hospital is a regional anal cancer centre and hosts the significant polyp and early rectal cancer MDT for management of these conditions in the Unit.  We have one of the largest endoscopy departments in the country.

We are looking for someone experienced in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and a high standard of clinical skills.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based across Royal Derby Hospital and with clinical activity also delivered at community sites across Derbyshire. The post holder will have a 10 PA job plan including outpatient clinics, endoscopy, day case and inpatient operating as well as time for patient administration, ward rounds and supporting professional activities.

The post holder will provide emergency cover as part of a 1 in 9 consultant day time rota and 1:18 nights and weekends rota as well as being expected to participate in a 1:8 surgical paediatric on call rota providing 24 hour cover for paediatric emergencies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provision with General & Colorectal consultant colleagues of a General & Colorectal service for Southern Derbyshire and the surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
  • Responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & teaching of trainee staff
  • Provision of an out of hours general and colorectal service with consultant colleagues including on-call commitments
  • Cover for consultant colleagues annual leave and other authorised absence, including care of patients and supervision of trainee doctors (a minimum of 6 weeks notice is to be given for all leave requests)
  • Responsibility for the professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity locally & nationally as appropriate
  • Participation in medical audit under local arrangements, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD
  • Involvement in research & supervision of trainees in audit / research
  • Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate
  • Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Trust e.g. domiciliary consultations or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service.  (This excludes work done under direct arrangements between an individual Consultant & a third party, e.g. Category 2)
  • Participation in Medical Student Teaching Programmes & Examinations
  • Responsibility for implementing Infection Control Policies
