Job overview

An opportunity for the appointment of a fixed-term Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join a busy district general hospital in the West Midlands. The post holder will be joining the existing General Surgical team and is expected to excel in Colorectal and Emergency Surgery. The colorectal unit has 8 existing substantive consultants. The unit has been fully laparoscopic for over a decade, performs trans-anal surgery, and endoscopic submucosal resections and is now trending towards the excellence of robotic colorectal resections. The unit offers all aspects of subspecialties, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and early rectal cancer, in collaboration with regional units for the pelvic floor. The new appointee is expected to join the existing IBD surgeon, who supports the IBD team with nearly 3000 patients on the database and has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease and early rectal cancer. The appointee is supported by GI radiology, complex abdominal wall reconstruction MDT and experienced plastic surgeons to carry out complex fistula work. Additional experience exists in other specialist areas, including pelvic resections, which would be preferable to support the existing service provision within the Directorate. The post holder will have the opportunity to get trained in Robotic Surgery, or if they possess experience in robotic surgery, it will be an added qualification.
