We are seeking an enthusiastic Locum Consultant Cardiologist with subspecialty interests (sessions to be agreed) within the Cardiology Directorate at Aintree University Hospital. You will join a collaborative team delivering comprehensive cardiology care across the Aintree site, with strong links to regional partners. The role combines inpatient leadership (ACCU and cardiology ward), subspecialty sessions and outpatient work including A&G, e‑RS/RAS triage, and teaching/supervision.

This locum post is designed to ensure continuity of consultant‑level service provision while a substantive recruitment process is undertaken.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council, hold a licence to practice, and have membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK (or equivalent). They should be listed on the Specialist Register for Cardiology or be eligible for registration within six months of the appointment date.

Main duties of the job

  • Inpatient care: Consultant leadership for ward rounds (including PTWR), ACCU/ward 8 cover during designated weeks, and inpatient referrals.
  • Subspecialty activity: Sessions to be agreed as per subspecialty interest (to be agreed with Clinical Director).
  • Outpatients & access: General cardiology clinics; Advice & Guidance (A&G); Referral Assessment Service (RAS) triage; contribution to reducing waiting times and improving access.
  • On‑call: Participation in the cardiology consultant on‑call rota in line with departmental arrangements; leadership of weekend ACCU and post‑take ward rounds as rostered.
  • Education & supervision: Teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates; support for Clinical/ Educational Supervision as appropriate; contribution to departmental teaching rounds and journal clubs.
  • Governance & quality: Participation in audit, QI, clinical governance, incident review, and mortality/M&M; maintaining high standards of documentation and consent.
  • Service development: Contribute to ongoing service continuity and quality improvement during the service gap period.

Indicative job plan (10 PAs)

The detailed timetable will depend on the appointee’s subspecialty interest and departmental need, but an indicative job plan may include:

Ward/ACCU weeks (approx. 6 per year):

  • AM: ACCU/ward rounds including PTWR (DCC)
  • PM: Ward reviews and board rounds (DCC)
  • Weekend: Participation in ACCU/post-take ward rounds per rota (on-call supplement applies)

Off-ward weeks (indicative):

  • 2 PAs Outpatient clinics (General/Heart Failure/Arrhythmia/Imaging)
  • 2–3 PAs Subspecialty sessions (Cath lab, pacing list, imaging, or device clinic)
  • 0.5–1 PA A&G/RAS triage and MDT meetings
  • 1.5 SPAs Teaching, supervision, CPD, audit, QI, and governance
  • Remainder: Admin and on-call session-in-lieu
