Job overview

Applications are invited for a 12-month locum Consultant post in Anaesthesia to join our dynamic and thriving A.C.S.A. accredited department at the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Bath.

We are looking for committed anaesthetists of proven ability who will be able to contribute fully to both clinical and managerial roles within the department. The candidates should bring skills or knowledge that will enhance and expand the services already provided at the Royal United Hospital. An ability to embrace change and to develop services for more effective care delivery will be considered an asset.

The appointee will work clinically at the RUH (Royal United Hospital) Combe Park site and at Sulis Hospital (which is owned by the RUH) at Peasdown St John, 7 miles south of Bath.

In addition to weekday work, there will be an expectation for the appointee to cover resident evening on-call sessions (17:30 – 20:30), resident daytime weekend on-call sessions, non-resident night on-call sessions or daytime weekend trauma lists at the RUH.  The appointee may be expected to cover some elective sessions at the weekend.

Applications from candidates outside of the region are welcomed.

Applicants wishing to work less than full-time or flexible working patterns would be considered. The successful applicants will hold a CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent).

Main duties of the job

The post will be primarily based at the RUH, and the holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Clinical Director. A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential. It is mandatory that you have an annual appraisal.

Our rotas are published as early in advance as possible and we undertake to make the flexible element of the program as varied as possible. There may be a variety of the following lists: general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, day-case surgery, urology, ENT, gynaecology, ophthalmology, dental and onco-plastic breast surgery.

The appointee may be required to deliver pre-assessment and peri-operative medicine sessions in addition to theatre work. The department uses the CLW electronic rota management programme.
