Main duties of the job

This post offers a vibrant and varied timetable, typically including 2–3 theatre sessions, 1–2 clinics, and protected research time for those keen to build their academic portfolio. While based within Colorectal and Upper GI, you’ll also gain hands‑on experience across General Surgery and Vascular, ensuring a broad and well‑rounded training environment.

Every 10th week you’ll take part in a dedicated Hot Week, delivering emergency surgical care within a structured, consultant‑supported team — an ideal opportunity to sharpen acute decision‑making skills.

The role builds on your CT1–2 foundation and provides excellent exposure to both elective and emergency GI surgery. You’ll join the 1:10 on‑call rota, access regular emergency lists, and contribute to the department’s audit, research and publication output. All registrars rotate across teams and work within compliant, trainee‑friendly shift patterns.

As a registrar in our department, you’ll be fully integrated into all surgical teams, sharing the on‑call service through supportive, compliant shift patterns designed with trainee wellbeing in mind.

Your role will include:

  • Active involvement in rostered emergency work, giving you real‑time experience in managing acute surgical presentations
  • Regular participation in consultant‑led ward rounds, with opportunities to lead and supervise junior colleagues
  • Attendance at a variety of outpatient clinics, enhancing your diagnostic and patient‑management skills
  • Operating on both elective and emergency lists, ensuring a strong and diverse operative logbook
  • Working within a prospectively covered rota, providing stability and predictable training opportunities
