My name is Jane Yarnell, my role as the Lead Practitioner Development Technician for the OUHFT Pharmacy Department means that I am privileged to lead the training for our fantastic team of Pharmacy Level 2 apprentices, enabling them to gain the skills necessary to become a Pharmacy Assistant within one of our departments across the trust. Pharmacy Assistants are essential members of the pharmacy team working under the supervision of a Pharmacist and alongside Pharmacy Technicians to provide pharmaceutical care for the patient. The duties are varied, and it is not simply a matter of counting tablets. I am currently looking for a level 2 Pharmacy apprentice to join the John Radcliffe Hospital Pharmacy department.

Main duties of the job

During your 15-month contract full practical in-house training will be provided, working towards gaining a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support staff, this qualification will provide you with the skills to work as a Pharmacy Assistant. You will learn how to take in prescriptions, dispense them and how to order, receive and maintain pharmaceutical stock. You must be a team player, keen to further your education, and have a good attention to detail as well as the ability to work accurately in a busy environment and be able to communicate clearly with patients and staff.

It is desirable that you have 4 GCSEs of 3 or above, including Maths and English but we can help with functional skills.

Salary: £7.55 per hour for the first 12 months rising to current minimum wage for the remaining length of contract (minimum wage is age related and subject to annual government review).

Successful applicants currently working under Agenda for Change working for NHS or another affiliated organisation, would remain at current salary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To complete all work set by your assessor.
• To receive prescriptions from patients, checking for allergies and interactions with other drugs.
• To dispense prescriptions safely learning how to understand pharmacy legislation and regulatory requirements.
• To receive and check pharmacy medicine deliveries, and to maintain stock in the pharmacy robot.
• To put away medicines into their correct locations and maintain clean and tidy storage areas.
• To expiry date check medicines and rotate the stocks to ensure medicines are used in date order and avoid waste, both within the pharmacy and on wards.
