Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the role of Lead Clinical Vision Scientist. This pivotal leadership role combines clinical excellence, research leadership, education, and service development. You will be responsible for the overall delivery of our ophthalmic electrodiagnostic service, recognised regionally and nationally for its specialist expertise, with a strong emphasis on paediatric care and patients with complex needs.

As the clinical lead, you will lead a dedicated multidisciplinary team and be accountable for the clinical, managerial, financial, academic, and governance functions of the service. You will also drive forward a dynamic programme of clinical research, teaching, and quality improvement, helping to shape the future of vision science services locally and nationally.

The successful candidate will have: A postgraduate qualification (e.g., MSc or PhD) in Vision Science, Clinical Physiology, or related field. HCPC registration or equivalent professional registration. Significant post-qualification experience in clinical electrophysiology. A strong track record in research and/or academic publication. Experience in team leadership, governance, and service development.

The main duties of the role include:

  • Provide clinical leadership and overall management of the Vision Science Centre, delivering a high-quality ophthalmic electrodiagnostic service for the Trust and regional tertiary referrals.
  • Undertake and supervise advanced diagnostic testing including VEP, ERG, and EOG, with particular focus on complex and paediatric cases.
  • Lead on interpretation and reporting of electrodiagnostic tests, ensuring clinical accuracy and timely communication of results.
  • Oversee departmental governance, risk management, audit activity, and compliance with national standards.
  • Manage the Centre’s budget, equipment procurement, and workforce planning, ensuring sustainability and service development.
  • Drive the academic and research portfolio, securing grant funding and publishing research findings in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Lead formal and informal teaching for undergraduates, postgraduates, junior doctors, and visiting professionals.
  • Support staff development through appraisal, supervision, and delivery of training programmes.
  • Represent the Centre locally and nationally, contributing to strategic planning, regional teaching programmes, and professional networks.
