An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented, ambitious and dynamic person to join the Surgery and Planned Care Division at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as the Laboratory Manager/Chief Maxillofacial and Orthodontic Technologist.

The post holder will be professionally responsible for and performing the full range of highly complex and specialised work including innovative development and design, providing the technical support and clinical/technical advice to major specialised areas of Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, ENT Head and Neck Cancer Surgical Team and Plastic Surgery for Cleft Lip and Palate.

Main duties of the job

  • 1.    Professionally responsible for the management of the Dental Technology Service and staff, focusing management efforts in co-ordinating the multi- disciplined technical services to provide effective and efficient service to support clinical activity. 2.    Actively participate in, and on policies, procedures and equipment with consultants and staff in ongoing and new developments within the department and associated functional areas. 3.    Manage the laboratory non-staff budget/ budget holder, and budget setting for the Dental Technical Service. To maintain stores and sock control for the laboratory/authorised signatory, budget holder for Dental Laboratory services expenditure within agreed limits. 4.    Recognise and respond to clinical/ educational developments and advise Clinical Director/Directorate Manager on likely cost pressures. 5.    Ensure H&S standards are maintained in the laboratory. 6.    Responsible for the technical equipment/capital assets of the laboratory.

Financial Responsibilities

  • 1.    To be responsible for managing the non-staff budget/ budget holder, and budget setting for the laboratory. 2.    To be responsible for managing external activity providing income generation to the department.

Responsibilities for People or Training

  • 3.    Monitor staff performance and amend practices accordingly. To include, appraisal, establishment of staffing levels, staff sickness and leave, discipline and grievances, leave allocation, study leave and training. 4.    To be actively involved in the interviewing and recruitment of junior staff. 5.    Provide complex advice to clinical, technical and nursing staff on all aspects of professional, technical and quality issues viz. the construction of specialist maxillofacial prostheses and those for ablative cancer surgery. 6.    Provide and participate in the provision of post-graduate training ie. seminars and lectures. 7.    Provide educational support and training to junior staff leading to a professional qualification. 8.    Preparation of teaching models.
