Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Critical Care Unit

We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic, caring and compassionate individual with significant critical care experience and excellent communication skills to join our dynamic and innovative Critical Care Outreach team (iMobile) at the Princess  Royal University Hospital.

The iMobile team supports with the early recognition, escalation and management of deteriorating patients in the areas outside of Critical Care, assessing, treating and stabilising patients, carrying out rapid transfers to critical care and following up patients after discharge from Critical Care.

Delivering patient safety education and training (including simulation days) for ward staff is also integral to the role. The team provide teaching focused on early recognition and prevention of patient deterioration incorporating a human factors approach.

As part of the cross site Critical Care department, we also work collaboratively with the Critical Care units and iMobile service at the Denmark Hill site for both the delivery of patient care and provision of education. Main duties of the job

Trust CQC inspections have recognised the iMobile service as an ‘Outstanding Area of Practice’.

The Critical Care department offer well-established, structured teaching and staff development programmes. We are affiliated to King’s College London as a member of the King’s Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

• To have advanced Critical Care expertise to use their knowledge and skills in an holistic approach, so that clinical decision-making leads to prompt and appropriate action in the best interests of the patient
• You must be able to demonstrate expert patient assessment skills and evidence based decision making, with the ability to work autonomously within agreed protocols of the iMobile service, and as part of a team
• Delivering patient care in a variety of clinical settings, your role will be to work within the iMobile Critical Care team assessing, managing, and treating patients in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team
• To work in close co-operation with multi-disciplinary teams, facilitating high standards of expert, holistic nursing care to patients who are acutely/critically ill outside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting
• Assess the health needs of the deteriorating patient through physical examination, history taking and diagnostic studies in consultation with the ICU Consultant, Resident Doctors, and Senior iMobile Nursing Team
• Develop and manage a plan of care for the patient in consultation with the ITU consultant, Resident Doctors and Senior iMobile Nursing Team
• Provide direct support at the bedside, as required, until patients are stabilised or relocated to a higher level of care including, delivery of specified critical care therapies on the ward
• To support the patient in transitioning from ward to critical care nursing and vice versa
• To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives
• Good verbal and written communication skills so that professional advice or care guidance and instructions are well understood by patients, their relatives and/or carers, and members of the multi-disciplinary team
• Communicates effectively with patients, their relatives and carers, colleagues and students
• Functions as an effective role model in the clinical setting in demonstrating the application of breadth and depth of nursing knowledge, skills, behaviour and in advising and supporting members of the multi-disciplinary team
• Facilitates and supports the professional development of other nurses

• You will be enthusiastic about education and be able to demonstrate previous experience of teaching and supervision and assessment of practice
• To deliver specific deteriorating patient education and training for qualified health care professionals and students to promote their learning and ability to recognise and escalate clinical deterioration early in order to deliver safe and effective patient care
• To contribute to the wider educational activities within the service – ensuring attendance at and contributing to the delivery of educational activities to the multi-disciplinary team within Critical Care
• To promote, support and encourage the application of research and of evidence based practices
• To have your own portfolio of responsibility including areas of clinical guidance, audit, research, and service development
• Commit to undertake any training required for the post
