Job overview

The successful candidate will be expected to register for and to complete an MRes or MPhil at the University of Manchester during their 2-year post. This Masters-level qualification is fully funded as part of this opportunity.

The post is funded by Atos Medical, a global medical device company with an interest in airway devices in the critically ill. The focus of the research degree is a funded program of airway and tracheostomy research. Anticipated outcomes include: systematic review, retrospective evaluation of a large database, prospective evidence-based implementation of a weaning study, developing a weaning module in MFTs electronic healthcare record system (EPIC).

The post-holder will undertake a range of interventional, complex studies, supporting delivery of commercial and academic studies. The post will be based within the Acute Intensive Care Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, but the candidate will be required to work across the MFT campus, with occasional cross site working at the Oxford Road Campus required for research activity. The successful candidate will be supported and mentored through Wythenshawe hospital, with supervision provided by research active consultants.

Main duties of the job

  • Duties will include: Program of research Systematic review of the literature Retrospective evaluation of the existing MFT database (10,000 patients) Prospective evidence-based optimal tracheostomy weaning study Weaning module developed in EPIC (electronic patient record system) Clinical work on the AICU at Wythenshawe Hospital One long day per week (8am-8:30pm) Opportunity for participation in the on-call rota (nights, weekends) for additional pay Supporting the ICU research portfolio Confirming if participants are eligible for inclusion into research studies according to the study protocol Gaining informed consent Assessing, responding and reporting adverse events Performing medical examination of participants Liaising with principal investigators Providing medical cover for study visits Working alongside senior facility delivery team and assessing all aspects of study feasibility and risk.
