Job overview

You are warmly invited to apply for the post of Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF).  The post is based on the Critical Care Units at University Hospital.  The post is for 12 months and the successful candidate will be required to start in August 2026.

The JCFs will join the Junior Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) rota, which is staffed by anaesthetic, medical and surgical trainees.   There is close supervision and support from the Consultant Intensivists and the Senior ICM Trainees.

N.B. We reserve the right to close a vacancy before the closing date if we receive a high volume of applications or if there has been a change in organisational priorities.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and forward thinking department with a reputation for research and education.

JCFs admit and care for critically ill medical and surgical patients.  They will gain excellent experience and skills, which will be applicable to any acute specialty.

UHCW is the Major Trauma centre for the Central England Trauma Network, with an on–site helipad.   The General Critical Care Unit has 27 funded beds and there is a separate Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit with 14 funded beds.  The Critical Care Units  manage over 1600 admissions per year.

Multidisciplinary team working is fostered with a nurse-led approach to care, including a well-developed critical care outreach service.  There is a multidisciplinary team brief every morning which is led by the nurse in charge of GCCU that day and the consultant team on duty. It is attended by Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation, Speech and Language Therapists, Pain Team Nurses, Research team, Major Trauma Co-ordinators, Critical care Outreach Team and Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation.

The team brief also includes the “Safety Huddle” where any patient safety incidents occurring in the previous 24 hours are highlighted so that actions taken and any learning points are disseminated to the rest of the team. Other multidisciplinary teams such as Nutrition and Dietetics and Microbiology also attend GCCU on a regular basis.
