Job overview

These posts are to accommodate an expanded critical care service within the directorate at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The directorate operates on 3 sites. These posts will be on the Hammersmith site.

The units at Hammersmith operate 32-44 beds on the 2nd floor of A block. This is primarily an elective centre offering cardiac surgery, cardiology, a wide range of cancer surgery including upper gastro-intestinal, hepatobiliary, thoracic, major gynaecological, as well as medical specialities including renal transplantation, haemato-oncology and pulmonary hypertension. The post affords clinical exposure and experience whilst allowing the junior fellow to develop non-clinical interests.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a team of 14 Residents (SHOs) and 8 Middle Grade (Registrars).

The SHO / JCF rota is 1 in 7 with prospective cover (nights and long days)

The shifts are from 08:00am (0800 for Registrars) -1800pm short days or from 08:00am to 21:00pm long days or 20:00pm to 09:00am nights

All junior rotas comply with the regulations as set out in the junior doctor terms and conditions of service 2016.

The JCF is encouraged to participate in non-clinical work to facilitate their professional development for which time can be set aside by mutual agreement

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide High Quality Care to Patients in Critical Care Medicine

  • As part of a team including consultants, trainees and registrars provide day to day care to adult ICU patients.
  • Take part in daily multi-specialty ward rounds.
  • Attend microbiology ward rounds and MDT meetings.
  • Liaise with referring teams and other specialists

Research, Teaching and Training

  • Take part in teaching and research opportunities provided by the department
  • Enter patients into research trials as appropriate and assisted by the research team
  • Develop teaching skills as required and assist with bed side teaching of undergraduates

Clinical Governance

  • Participate in department quality and M&M meetings.
  • Participate in clinical audit and act on findings
  • Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance and quality
  • Attend daily safety briefings and act on concerns raised
  • Comply with trust infection control policies as relevant to the ICU
  • Improve patient experience by communicating effectively with patients and families

Other responsibilities

  • To comply with systems to control and monitor hours, leave and sickness for junior doctors so that rotas are EWTD and new junior doctor contract compliant.
