Job overview

Following the expansion of our Interventional Radiology (IR) service, we are excited to establish a pioneering IR nursing workforce at the new Royal Marsden IR Unit in Sutton. We are seeking to recruit an experienced IR nurse, or an experienced nurse leader with clearly evidenced transferable skills, as outlined in the job description. Initially, the role will involve supporting and coordinating four IR sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, with plans to expand the service further and open additional sessions from Monday to Friday. During the initial phase of the project, the role will be split between 60% clinical duties and 40% management responsibilities, until the department becomes fully operational. The successful applicant will be expected to rotate across the different clinical areas within IR and demonstrate the required clinical competencies, including: •    Assisting or scrubbing in the procedure room •    Providing nurse-led conscious sedation •    Caring for patients in Stage 1 recovery •    Undertaking nurse-led pre-assessment for sedation cases Shifts are allocated according to service needs every Tuesday and Thursday: •    Procedure Room / Sedation RN: 08:00–17:00 or 08:30–17:30 •    Recovery RN: 09:00–18:00 or 09:30–18:30 •    Nurse-led pre-assessment: TBC, 8.5 hours per day (Monday/Wednesday/Friday)

Main duties of the job

  • To take responsibility for the safe clinical nursing care of patients attending the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
  • To assess the needs of patients and develop, implement, document and evaluate appropriate care within the department ensuring that procedures are carried out within local and trust policies and procedures. To meet the requirements of the NMC’s Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice, with particular reference to personal accountability for nursing duties undertaken.
  • To work with other members of the internal and external multidisciplinary team, to ensure the delivery of a safe, efficient and effective service.
  • To provide strong clinical leadership of the nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality safe patient care.
  • To support a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice
  • To manage and participate in the IR nursing on-call rota

Leadership and Management

  • Manage the IR nursing service in liaison with the IR management, the IR consultants, the IR nurses, IR support workers and all the members of the multi-disciplinary team to maximise high quality patient care
  • To maintain clinical credibility through practice and to utilise the findings of nursing research and evidence-based care to optimise high quality patient care

Pre-Procedural Nursing Duties

  • To actively manage, delegate and participate in the daily IR huddle, brief and debrief in line with local policy (LocSSIPs)
  • Liaise with referring doctors, wards and day area staff to ensure pre-procedural work is completed in line with the local policy and checklists.

Intraprocedural Nursing Duties

  • In liaison with the IR lead/deputy and IR co-ordinator, manage, delegate and participate in the planning/management of the IR procedure list, paying attention to the staffing levels of IR and bed capacity of the trust.

Scrubbing Duties

  • To act as the department lead in all aspects of the IR scrub nursing, to create, maintain and teach competencies to junior staff.
  • Check the requirements for the procedure with the interventional radiologist and collect any specialist equipment and instruments needed before the case in line with the WHO checklist

The management component of the role will include: •    Writing policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to support safe practice •    Supporting the setup of the new clinical department, in collaboration with the Chelsea IR team •    Line management of part-time staff during Phase 1 •    Leading full recruitment of IR nursing staff following full business case approval (Phase 2) •    Assessing and signing off staff competencies
