Lochaber Integrated Midwifery Team is seeking an experienced enthusiastic midwife who wishes to work as part of a small friendly local team in a beautiful part of the country.
This fixed term post to cover maternity leave offers an ideal opportunity to experience remote and rural midwifery practice within Lochaber, in the West Highlands of Scotland. It is the home of Ben Nevis and covers a large geographical area of outstanding natural beauty. Stretching from the southern end of Loch Ness down to Glencoe and west to the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the coast including the isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna. It is the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’!
The area offers an excellent variety of outdoor pursuits, including world-class mountain biking at Fort William, fantastic hillwalking and climbing, as well as coastal activities and winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding and ice climbing. Lochaber also boasts a wide variety of historical and cultural attractions. The total population of the area is around 20,000 people with its main town being Fort William (population 10,000) as well as many other small towns and villages such as Mallaig, Kinlochleven, Spean Bridge and Fort Augustus.
The post offers an exciting opportunity for experienced midwives who are keen to practice midwife-led care and develop their skills as an autonomous practitioner in remote and rural practice. The Lochaber midwifery team are based in Fort William and provide caseload midwifery care to around 200 pregnant women annually in the area, offering great continuity. We offer birth within the Midwifery Unit at the Belford Hospital or at home for those women having Primary Midwife-led care. For the management, care and transfer of women with more complex needs and sick neonates the midwifery team work closely with NHS Highland Obstetric, Midwifery and Neonatal teams based in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness (approx 67 miles away). The midwifery team work flexibly to provide a 24/7 service and have a commitment to on-call working.
Interested applicants should be NMC registered and ideally be educated to degree level or have relevant clinical experience. Proficiency in NIPE would be advantageous. The successful applicant will be a good team worker but also be confident to work independently.
A current valid UK driving licence is essential and you will be expected to travel between various work locations to meet the operational requirements of the service.
