Job overview

Seeking an individual with extensive intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) experience during spinal surgeries. You would also be able to conduct neurophysiological investigations in both outpatient & inpatient setting; performing mobile electroencephalography (EEG), somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) & nerve conduction studies for the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel syndrome. You will also assist the consultant during their electromyography & nerve conduction clinics. If you are a qualified Clinical Physiologist but do not have experience of IONM then you may be able to join our team as a Band 7 - Annex 21 Trainee. This is a 4-year in-house training programme which will equip you with the skills & knowledge to independently perform IONM during spinal & peripheral nerve injury surgeries. Depending on your skills & experience of IONM you may enter in year 1 – 4 as appropriate.

As a guide to level of experience & competency necessary our 3rd year trainees work independently performing spinal IONM & take part in the department on-call service.

Remuneration during the training as below;

  • Yr 1 60% of the top of a Band 7
  • Yr 2 65% of the top of a Band 7
  • Yr 3 70% of the top of a Band 7
  • Yr 4 75% of the top of a Band 7

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time band 7 role: 37.5 hours over 7 days, typically 4 days 8-18:00 or 3 days 8:00-21:00.

The department carries out a range of clinical neurophysiological tests and monitors approximately 1000 surgical procedures each year.

The successful candidate would be expected to work across all areas of the department.

Main Duties include:

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring performed during;

  • ·         Complex neuro-spinal and spinal-orthopaedic procedures.
  • ·         Peripheral Nerve injury surgery.

Assisting in electromyography clinics.

Nerve conduction studies for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Participate in the intraoperative Neuromonitoring on-call service.

The department also provides a mobile Evoked Potentials & Electroencephalography (EEG) service to which suitably qualified staff may contribute.

This role is patient facing and primarily theatre based. Excellent communication and team working skills are paramount.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • ·         Independently plan, perform and interpret a range of advanced Neurophysiological investigations to a high level of competence to patients.
  • ·         Assist Consultant Neurophysiologist with EMG (Electromyography) examinations, NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) in the EMG Laboratory.
  • ·         Provide written factual reports on a range of complex Neurophysiological investigations.
  • ·         May initiate and participate with research and development programmes.
  • ·         Maintain continuous professional development appropriate to the range of Neurophysiology services to patients.
  • ·         Take part in the on-call service for Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Surgery (giving cover at nights, weekends and public holidays).
  • ·         Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure service(s) meet changing healthcare needs.
  • Provide support and assistance to Clinical Neurophysiology staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.
