An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time band 2 Healthcare assistant in Paediatric A+E at St Helier Hospital. Applicants must have experience in a paediatric clinical setting and have evidence of personal development. Excellent team working and interpersonal skills will be required; and previous paediatric experience is essential.

Job summary

Working under the direct supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse who delegates tasks to the post holder. The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) will deliver high quality nursing care to children and young people (CYP), as part of a team. The post holder is responsible for their own practice, working within the defined limits of competence and within the scope of the role.  The registered nurse retains accountability for the care delivered by the HCA

Clinical Duties

  • Deliver clinical care to children and young people as required within set protocols, competencies and within the scope of the health care assistant remit.
  • Deliver agreed standards of nursing care under the direct supervision of the registered nurse who retains accountability.
  • Ensure that nursing care is patient focused and that compassionate, patient centred care is delivered at all times.
  • Ensure due regard is given to the trust values, customs and spiritual beliefs of patients and that equity of care is maintained at all times.
  • Actively maintain effective communication with the registered nurse who is supervising the care and with other disciplines. Actively communicate with children and young people, (CYP), and their families and at all times.
  • Keep up-to-date accurate nursing records, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times reporting back to the registered nurse and ensuring that records are countersigned by the RN.
  • Provide direct care to the CYP within his / her own level of competence as delegated by the registered nurse.  .
  • Work with nursing and other healthcare professions, patients and their relatives/carers to assist in admission of YP to the paediatric ward.
  • Ensure competency in use of and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
  • Report all serious untoward clinical incidents in the appropriate manner to the registered nurse or the senior nurse on duty.
  • To develop an understanding of Information & Clinical Governance / Risk Management.
