Job overview

Swansea Bay University Health Board are currently recruiting for HCSWs to join our team at Morriston Hospital.

If you are hard-working, caring and motivated then this may be a chance to open a new chapter in your life! in a role where you could make a big difference to patients who need our care.

As you can imagine, our hospitals don’t close and as such our HCSW’s work a variety of shift patterns to ensure our patients get around the clock care. A typical shift pattern is a long day 7:00am -7:30pm which does mean long shifts, but less days worked each week. After a couple of weeks this will also include night duty which is 7:00pm-7.30am.

Due to the nature of our rota's, please only apply to this vacancy if you are happy to work these shifts and don’t have restrictions on the days you can work.

All candidates that apply for this vacancy will go through a shortlisting process, if you are shortlisted you will be required to attend a ‘Meet and Greet’ to meet our Matrons and ward managers, see the areas or wards you could be working and have an opportunity to ask any questions you have. Following the ‘Meet and Greet’ you will then be invited to an interview.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will be appointed to either of the following dependant on experience:

Health Care Support Worker (Band 3) - If the person specification is met and experience supports appointment

Trainee Health Care Support Worker (Band 3 - Annex 21) as set out within the NHS Wales Terms & Conditions of Employment (please see additional information provided which explains the trainee pay arrangements known as Annex 21).

The trainee post will be applicable when the successful candidate has a current level of experience that supports appointment but requires further training to the full remit of the Health Care Support Worker. It is a condition of appointment to the trainee position that the required competencies are achieved within 12 months*.

On successful attainment of the competencies to the required level you will be appointed to the full remit of Health Care Support Worker and will work to the complete Job Description commensurate to that post.

During the training period you will undertake a series of competencies as well as on the job training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a trainee, you will receive comprehensive training while being an employee, allowing you to develop the essential knowledge and skills required for this vital role. During the training period, you will gain hands on experience and professional development, with your pay set at 75% of the pay band maximum payment of the fully qualified rate (Band 3 salary). Upon successful completion of your training, your pay will increase to the Band 3 pay scale.

If the competencies are not achieved within 12 months from appointment this will not allow for successful progression to the full Band 3 role and this may result in re-deployment.

Timeframes for completion of training may be extended to take account of individual post holder circumstances such as long-term absence, Maternity Leave etc. and is at the discretion of the Manager.

Please see the attached job description and person specification for further details.
