Most of our service users have mild to moderate learning disability and or ASD with complex needs and additional mental health problems who can display the extremes of challenging behaviour. Within our secure services, service users will have committed a range of offences.

These services are highly specialised, so we are looking for kind, caring and compassionate individuals who are enthusiastic and willing to support their colleagues in developing the team to enable the delivery of expert care to these patient groups with a commitment to supporting and advocating for people with a learning disability and/or ASD.

If you do have care experience, but no care certificate, you will be expected to complete the care certificate within 12 weeks of commencing your post and will be paid a Band 2 until you have completed the care certificate.

Main duties of the job

To assist in the provision of support and care under the guidance of a qualified nurse  and therapist, for patients with health and social care needs, on the unit or when  supporting patients in the community. This is achieved over a 24-hour period on a rota system and includes days, nights,  weekends, bank holidays (including Christmas and New Year)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Take a role for care delivery under the direction of qualified nurse/deputy/unit  manager. • Actively encourage patients to become involved in all aspects of their lifestyle.  This includes the monitoring and updating person centred plans.  • Support patients to identify their own health needs and support them  accessing health professionals and facilities. • Identify and provide practical and emotional support for patients to engage in  a range of everyday tasks, which include supporting patients with their  personal hygiene needs, cooking, shopping, cleaning, managing finances, budgeting and all aspects of patient engagement. • The post holder will support patients to access and participate in social,  leisure, educational and occupational activities within the unit and the wider  community. This will involve escorting patients away from the unit following a  full risk assessment.  • Identify possible risk situations and report them to the manager and follow risk  assessments. • All staff will be trained to an agreed level of Safety Intervention Training.  Once this training has been achieved, the staff member will be expected to  respond to incidents that may include physical aggression which as a last  resort may result in restraint. • To act as a key worker for patients. • Perform and record clinical observations in line with Trust policy. • To have knowledge or be prepared to learn about the CQC requirements  within an inpatient setting.
