Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity offered for development, working in a flag ship dementia  acute assessment ward. We are looking for a Foundation year 3 medic to work along side Old age Consultant psychiatrists,  staff grade medics and ACP's. You will also have a role in supporting trainee FY 1's, ACP's  and FY2's.

The ward brings daily use of both psychiatric skills and physical health skills as generally most patients have co-morbidity issues. You will have opportunity to contribute to the multi disciplinary team and work with experienced nurses and OT's.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for day to day physical and psychiatric health of the Cubley unit male and female side patients, alongside your fellow medics and wider MDT. The Cubley Unit is split into 2 wards which   are 18 bedded single sex wards and take acute admissions from Derby City and Derbyshire.

The trust has a robust gate keeping service in the form of the Dementia rapid response team and as part of the MDT you will get opportunity to see the work that team does in the community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This full-time post in Psychiatry is held within a busy Dementia Assessment Unit based at Kingsway Hospital, Derby. There are 36 beds split between four pods.

This post offers the opportunity for additional experience in other areas of older adult psychiatry as well as other specialties which can be guided by the interests of the applicant.

Study opportunities include a weekly Psychiatric Journal Club as well as the chance to be involved in local ward teaching and medical student teaching.

The Team

Medical staffing comprises two SAS doctors, each working 0.6 wte, one FY1 doctor and one Consultant Dr Farrington. There is a nursing phlebotomy service and an ECG technician visits routinely.

The Work

This is a 0900-1700 full-time job working within an established and experienced multi-professional team looking after a diverse case mix of patients who experience behaviours that challenge in the context of dementia and delirium. Comorbidity is common including frailty-related disorders, the consequences of alcohol misuse, social care breakdown and complex relationship dynamics. Models of care are consequently deployed flexibly from palliative approaches to neurorehabilitation within the biopsychosocial paradigm. The ward is a Trust pilot for the Teepa Snow, Positive Approach to Care scheme.

On-call slots in Acute Psychiatry covering the Radbourne Unit, Kingsway Site and Ward 1 at London Road Community Hospital (all within 3 miles of each other) are available if desired.

This post would provide an excellent grounding for those considering a career as a Psychiatrist, Physician or GP and previous post holders have enjoyed the post and followed a career on the psychiatry training scheme as a result.

The Support

One hour 1-1 supervision time per week with Dr Farrington.

  • Attendance at Psychiatric Journal Club/Case conference.
  • A vigorous, opinionated, compassionate multidisciplinary team.
