This post is being advertised as a fixed-term position due to current training gaps within the AMU, Respiratory, and Stroke departments.
This role offers broad based experience within in General Medicine, including responsibility for inpatient care, acute medical admissions, participation in the on call rota, and supervision of junior Doctors , working closely within Consultant led teams.

Main duties of the job
- Providing general care at Registrar level to the patients admitted, including supervision of day-to-day management. • Ward rounds • To undertake appropriate investigations and therapeutic procedures under supervision if necessary. • Training of junior colleagues • Liaison with patient’s carers & relatives • In case of any difficulties, ensure that advice is sought from a senior colleague. • To take part in regular ward based audit programme • To provide advice/supervision to trainees on adjacent ward when the registrar for that ward is absent • Attend fortnightly outpatient clinics • Review referrals to elderly department • Currently an 11 week rota with 16 varied

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We have a 24 bedded stroke unit and operate a 24 hour a day stroke thrombolysis service and daily TIA assessment service supported by stroke specialist nurses. There is also an early supported discharge scheme for stroke. We have a well-developed ortho-geriatric service supported by a consultant geriatrician and 2 trauma nurse specialists. Almost 95% of our hip fracture patients meet the criteria for the best practice tariff and we are the best hospital in the country providing hip fracture care.
Acute admissions are assessed on a 22 Bedded Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), or in the Accident and Emergency Department. The AAU is staffed by its own team of consultants and junior staff who provide early senior clinical assessment of patients with high rates of same-day discharge. The AAU team runs the “take” from 8am until 9pm, and provides on-going care to patients on AAU. There is a multi-disciplinary “early intervention team” to support same or next-day discharge for appropriate patients, and a 12 bedded ambulatory area SDEC. We operate a “ward-based” system of care for in-patients along with physicians from other specialties, with specialist wards for respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology and stroke as well as general acute wards. Each ward is staffed by 2-4 consultants and a team of junior staff.
The department of Geriatric Medicine provides acute in-patient services, post-acute rehabilitation, stroke and ortho-geriatric services and out-patient clinics at the West Suffolk Hospital site. In addition we provide out-patient clinics, and falls clinics in conjunction with Suffolk PCT at community hospitals in Newmarket and Sudbury and medical services to a 16 bedded rehabilitation ward in the community hospital at Newmarket.
