Applications are invited to apply for the post of 12 months FIXED TERM (WITH AN OPTION TO EXTEND) NHS Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. We invite you to apply to join our dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking breast surgical team. You would be the 7th member of our consultant team managing patients across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with breast disease. The current team also has expertise in the surgical management of skin cancer, and the surgical management of patients with a family history of breast cancer.
The breast surgery service is part of the 650 bedded Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, with two further hospitals St Michael’s and West Cornwall Hospital based in the West of the county. All breast clinical and diagnostic work is carried out at the Mermaid Centre (Truro) in a purpose built unit. Most routine breast surgery is undertaken at St Michael's Hospital in Hayle, where there are ring-fenced dedicated beds.
This busy and dynamic breast unit manages both symptomatic and breast screening patients. We treat > 640 patients a year with a new diagnosis of breast cancer and see approximately 12,000 outpatients annually. You would join a team already well established in oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques. Patients are offered a full range of reconstructive choices and we have good links with plastic surgeons in Exeter and Plymouth for those patients requiring free flap reconstruction both in the immediate and delayed setting. We are supported by a reconstructive breast nursing team and a team of expert breast care nurses.
The RCHT breast unit is an active research centre and eligible patients are offered entry into several multicentre national surgical trials such as POSNOC, LORIS and POBRAD M as well as a large number of oncology trials. In additional we are at the forefront of technological advances; we use radio-guided occult lesion localisation (ROLL) and have the largest national series and we have a 3D Tomosynthesis unit in theatre. We are supported in our clinics by a motivated research team and have been the leading recruiter in a number of international research trials.
