NHS TAYSIDE

SPECIALTY DOCTOR in EMERGENCY MEDICINE

PERMANENT POSTS – From Aug 2026

2 Full-time posts

Applications are invited for Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine in NHS Tayside, working both in Ninewells Hospital and Perth Royal Infirmary.

As part of a redesign of our staffing model, we are looking for two specialty doctors to join our team. We are looking to make a long-term investment in the successful candidates, with a view to working in Tayside on a permanent basis, eventually in a senior clinical decision maker (SCDM) role. Candidates looking to progress to CESR will be supported in achieving this.

Candidates must have at least 4 years of experience (whole time equivalent), with either two years in emergency medicine, or one year in emergency medicine with a year in another acute specialty post-FY2 (or equivalent).

The successful applicants will join an enthusiastic and innovative team to further enhance the provision of Emergency in Tayside. NHS Tayside has developed an Unscheduled Care system that proactively manages unscheduled ED attendance thereby minimising surges in demand and maintaining good patient flow, supporting achievement of the national 4 hour standard.

Consultant supervision and support will be given and training given to achieve all of the required competencies to work as a SCDM in the ED.

The rota is a full shift pattern and includes weekend and out of hours working across both sites. Sessions will be split as 8 DCC and 2 SPA.

We are looking to recruit 2 full time colleagues from August 2026.

Please note that we are not currently in a position to facilitate clinical attachments in the Tayside EDs.

Informal enquiries are welcome by contacting Dr Kieran Smith (EM Consultant) by emailing kieran.smith2@nhs.scot or Dr David MacKinlay ( EM Specialty Doctor) David.MacKinlay@nhs.scot

Closing Date: Monday 20th April 2026
